This collective, which began attracting attention in 1978, was politically engaged and represents one of the very first expressions of the avant-garde in China.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"499\" data-end=\"1055\">His work in charred wood sculptures initially revolved around totems and idols reminiscent of folkloric tutelary figures from northern China and Korea, imbued with primitivism. Later, his practice shifted toward simple forms with pure lines and a limited choice of themes: women with chignons, kiss\/couple, bird, male figure with a tail, pair of breasts. This process of simplification and progressive refinement sometimes leads to abstraction and, in the best cases, recalls the spirit of Constantin Brancusi\u2019s work\u2014an artist who greatly influenced him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1210\">Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture (like several other sculptors at the time), Wang Keping created a large wooden portrait of Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1372\">He was one of the invited artists at the exhibition <em data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1290\">\u201cChamps de la Sculpture\u201d<\/em> on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es in 1999, where he presented a group of monumental totems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EXHIBITION 1999 \u2013 Exhibition \u201cChamps de la Sculpture\u201d on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, Paris, France2013 \u2013 Creation of the sculpture The Thinker (5 m) for the Al Maaden Sculpture Park, Morocco Wang Keping is one of the most prominent members of the Xing Xing (Stars) group.
