Mun-Gi Yang was born in 1970 in Gwangju, in southwestern South Korea. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Chosun University, one of the country’s oldest universities. In 2012, the sculptor presented “Story of LUXURY STONE” at the Okgwa Art Museum in South Korea. This exhibition revealed his keen interest in the meaning and symbolism of the luxury handbag, exploring the aesthetic potential of stone.<\/p>\n

In this exhibition, 45 works explored the nature of objects and human beings, as well as the structure of social mechanisms in shaping contemporary desires. These “Luxury Stones,” while initially appearing as parodies of Chinese counterfeits of designer bags from brands like Louis Vuitton or Chanel, go far beyond simple imitation or representation. The very characteristics of these stone objects render the bag’s utilitarian function obsolete. By losing all functionality, the object is transformed into an icon. Only the desire for possession, linked to each brand’s unique visual identity, remains. Here, it is sublimated by the stone, which is polished and engraved as if it were a piece of jewelry, while simultaneously retaining its raw and timeless nature, characteristic of the sculpture tradition. The subversion thus applies to both the modern luxury object and the material itself. The weight of these luxury stones suggests both the massive and fetishistic nature of luxury brand consumption in Asia and the human exploitation involved in the production and acquisition of luxury goods. These works question the enduring economyhttps:\/\/www.galerieloft.com\/en\/artists\/mun-gi-yang\/ of a long tradition of constraints and imperatives linked to social success.\u00a0<\/p>\n
