Born in 1960, Guo Wei graduated in woodcut program at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1989, and currently lives and works in Sichuan Province, China. He is a pioneer of early group oil painting exhibitions at mainland institutions in the 90’s.<\/p>\n
Guo Wei consistently insists on the individual figure, and many of his subjects are Young girls that\u00a0surround\u00a0him, often his own daughter.<\/p>\n
Although trained in woodcut, he has mastered oil painting, playing with the sculptural qualities of the material\u00a0; for instance, in the exhibition, \u201cFabrication\u201d showing works in which the artist makes cut-outs from acrylic canvases. Guo Wei’s bold use of\u00a0colour\u00a0reflects the vitality of his subjects, and spray-paint effects add an urban touch to his paintings.<\/p>\n
We could sum up his production in a renewed reflection on individualism, strikingly rising after the deep changes in Chinese society over the past few years.<\/p>\n
